ลักษณะปัญหาที่มักเกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำในองค์กรที่ขาดมาตรฐานในงาน เช่น การส่งมอบงานล่าช้า ต้นทุนสูง ข้อบกพร่อง(Bug)บ่อยและเกิดปัญหาซ้ำซาก ผลงานจากสมาชิกของในทีมมีความแตกต่าง และทีมงานไม่สามารถทำงานแทนกันได้ เป็นต้น

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) เป็นมาตรฐานชั้นนำในการพัฒนาและปรับปรุงกระบวนการองค์กรซอฟต์แวร์และไอทีสู่ระดับสากล CMMI ได้รับการยอมรับอย่างสูงจากทั่วโลก และเป็นมาตรฐานต้นแบบในการพัฒนามาตรฐานอื่นๆในเวลาต่อมา

CMMI for Development ครอบคลุมการปรับปรุงกระบวนการใน4ด้านสำคัญ ได้แก่ 

(1) ด้านการพัฒนาซอฟต์แวร์ และผลิตภัณฑ์ (Engineering and Development)

(2) ด้านบริหารจัดการโครงการ (Project Management)

(3) ด้านจัดการและปรับปรุงกระบวนการ (Process Improvement and Management) 

(4) ด้านการสนับสนุนเพื่อความยั่งยืน (Support)
